Normal

Under acceleration the AC system will disengage the compressor clutch, this happens when you depress the pedal fully as in asking for passing power.

Pretty much any car/truck does that under heavier load, heavier acceleration/full throttle, the a/c clutch will disengage like radman said.

Indeed, but if the a/c stops blowing under fairly light load, I would suspect a vacuum problem. I had similar symptoms when the vacuum reservoir developed a pinhole leak (this is a ball-shaped plastic container, located under the fender and used to assist with vacuum when engine vacuum drops under load).

Agree, missed the stopped blowing part. It should still blow (least every truck and car I've owned) but warm air, if it actually stops blowing then more than likely vacuum issue somewhere.

My old 2001 XLT did this. It would default to the defroster vents when I climbed a hill near my house. It was due to a lose of vacuum. It turned out to be that the PO had stuck a sheet metal screw in an unused leg of a rubber "T". Doesn't take much of a leak under load. Hard to find, but an easy fix.
