air intake makes a low pitch sound which increases anddecreases on it's own. it comes and goes but doesn't seem to effect engine performance, there's no lights coming on the dash or any movement on the gauges. there seems to be a lack of back pressure out of the exhaust when the noise is present. one mechanic noticed a rattling coming from the catylitic(?) converter. it happens even with the air cover off the filter,it's also easy to stall engine when partially covering air intake. any suggestions? thanks in advance

If its an aftermarket intake, you may just be hearing it suck in the air. Even if its not, that still may be the answer. I know when my friend put his new one in, and he stopped the pedal, you could hear it suck the air in. Also check to make sure all the bolts and everything up there near the intake are secure.

noisey air intake

thanks for the reply but ther's no after market parts on it and everything is tight. talked to a ford service rep and he thinks it's a air regulation device just before the intake manifold but i won't know until it happens again and i unplug it. cheers

I bet it is. Called an IAC. Its a small siver cylinder. Common problem. Most need to be replaced. Easy to do youself. They cost about $60. Search the site for IAC whistling for loads of threads.
