Well I am going to see if I can find this problem. I suppose I should not touch it but I really have to.
First some history on the Explorer. 2005 XLS 4.0 114,000 miles on it . I just rebuilt the trans.
I bought his knowing it had a rebuilt title. So it had been in an accident but I had no way of knowing how bad. It looks good outside and inside.
So now that I had time to explore more and dig into things I find out it had been t boned on the passengers side. The door sill underneath shows damage and the dash actually shows some problems where I think the air bag deployed.
So I am going to pull the seat and start checking the wiring and also the dash area.
I WILL DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What somebody did was glue the front cover from the air bag onto the dash to cover the opening and it looks like there is one there. There are so many people out there that just don't care.

It is kind of a common problem, especially with the people that buy a wrecked vehicle and then fix it up and sell it. They save a lot of money that way. It's a good idea to get those checked out when buying a used vehicle.

I was able to get a passenger air bag for 35.00. Put it in and no air bag light. One more problem solved.

This car has been rigged from one end to the other. I wanted to replace the sun visors because the covers were off the mirrors. So I removed the visors and found that someone cut the wires off. I can't feel any wires in the overhead. I suppose that is how they stopped the lights from coming on at the mirrors.

Especially with the safety factor of an airbag, and obviously dummied up to be deceitful -- maybe you have a Dept of Consumer Affairs that can help you if you're interested in taking any legal action. One body shop I worked at had a vehicle come in with the same problem. The Consumer Affairs people showed up and swarmed all over it. But from there, I don't know if any action was helpful -- or if they just got a shrug of the shoulders.

I did a little searching on the subject. It seams that it would be legal to leave the pass air bag out if you inform the buyer. But I was not informed about it not being there.

Yep, that's typical. That is my point for calling it "deceitful". There are lots of guys that buy wrecked vehicles and fix them up and sell them -- without doing proper repairs.
