I'm having issues with my airbag instrument light on the dash of my 2000 Explorer XLT. It will not go out and I read in the manual that I should have it serviced immediatley and that my airbag wint go off if the light is on. Is there a way for me to fix it, is it common, or should I get it serviced??

First thing you will need is a scanner that can retrieve SRS (supplemental restraint system) codes. Any good repair shop, or even auto body shops should be able to pull the code and tell you where the problem is. Not much you can do without knowing the codes.

When you first start your truck does the airbag light blink? Our 2000 Mountaineer will do this from time to time. It blinks a code (like 3 blinks pause then 6 blinks or 3-7). In our case this means that one of the front seats's resistors for the side impact bags (which most Gen II's don;t have) is not making contact. If I reach under the rear of the offending seat and wiggle the cap on the yellow connector my airbag light will go out the next time I start the truck. The cap contains a resistor to fool the SRS into thinking there's a side airbag.

In our case this happens because my daughter and my grandson stick stuff under the front seats and disturb the resistors.
