2015 PIU
Hello All,

I have a 2015 Ford PIU that I have been cleaning up and fixing up. Did the 105K mile service and had to do a few other things and just when I thought I was done the air bag light came on.

Could use some help trying to address it I fired up FORScan and it gave me this:

Code: B1419 - Passenger Side Restraints Sensor 3

Additional Fault Symptom (93):
- No Operation

Status (-8B):
- DTC Present at Time of Request
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp is On for this DTC

Module: Restraint Control Module

I disconnected the connector under the passenger seat and sprayed it with contact cleaner along with one at the base of the pillar next to the front passenger seat. I'm a electrical engineer by trade and well versed with electronics. Honestly have not done much with wiring harnesses. I did replace the inside rubber seals on all the doors with parts I got at the local salvage yard recently and wondering if I yanked on something I shouldn't have. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

With out seeing the PIU in person I can’t tell you go check this or that, but this is the pinpoint test that Ford gives us. Maybe check these areas since you replaced the door seals and check for connector fitment.

Thanks for your response!

One thing I noticed in your message and on-line is that it says it the error code corresponds to Sensor 2 while FORScan says it is Sensor 3. Is it just a mistake in FORScan?

Now that I have looked up what the A, B and C pillars are :) and know what the sensors look like I'm guessing it is most likely a wiring problem since I have not been in an accident in the past few weeks. I did inspect the wiring I could find. the wiring in the B pillar was loose, the plastic clips that held them to pillar had come off. I don't believe I did this in the recent past, it was likely this way all along.

A couple of questions:

1) Safety first: Is there any danger that the air bags can go off when fiddling with the wiring? If so, disconnect battery and wait 1/2 hour?
2) Where can I get the wiring diagrams for these sensors?
3) Where I find some drawings that show how the wiring is routed, do these even exist?
4) Can I buy a sensor an plug it into the harness and see if the error goes away or changes, so I know which sensor I am after? Is this dangerous?
5) Any other strategies for narrowing down the problem?

Thank you!

Loose harness retainers are irrelevant. Look at the integrity of each wire that serves the indicated component. In my '16 PIU, the cargo trim panel can be simply pulled out from the C-pillar (without any other disassembly) far enough to see the impact sensor which is around the height of the door latch forward of the shoulder belt reel, inches from the door opening. This shows the whole cargo panel removed, which is NOT necessary just to look at the sensor & its wires.

1) No
2&3) The Ford service manuals & EVTMs.
4) Yes, but that's not the preferred diagnostic procedure, since you'd have to KNOW that the replacement is good. The only danger would be if it was bad, it could trigger the airbag module to either deploy, or to disable itself permanently. But that's VERY UNlikely.
5) Always start with visual inspection.

These show my '16 - yours is probably VERY similar.

Thanks a bunch for the images and answers.

I have done a visual inspection and not seen any obvious problems. Been a electronics guy for several decades, seen all kinds of thing that look perfectly normal, but don't make a connection, but it is a good starting point.

So far everything on line and the clipping above says Sensor 2, but FORScan says Sensor 3. Any chance I could get an approximate location of either one or both of those sensors? If I knew which sensor it was, I could unplug it and see if the error continues to be on and then chase down the wiring for that sensor. Is that a logical approach?

Where can I get access/buy the manuals where you got those pictures from?

I added some diagrams above.

Ford & others sell subscriptions to that info, but I have access through a friend's business, so I can't say what you get from most of those services. It's probably NOT worth buying, as little as you'd use it. But I think Ford sells a month at a reasonable price, which should be long enough to figure this out. Browse their websites - it should be pretty easy to find.

I think Forscan is wrong because the DTC B1419 with a 93 is from Ford.

I would remove your ground cable before you start messing with any airbag components. You don’t have to wait 30 minutes after you reconnect your battery.

If you had a bi-directional scanner then you could read the sensor data, and that would help you pinpoint the bad component.

You could always buy a passenger side impact sensor and see if your issue goes away. There is no programming on those. Definitely remove your ground cable if you do that route though.

The diagram shows the impact sensors
