On several occasions now, my 2006 Explorer XLT 2WD when hot or cold, sounds like an airplane when initially accelerating from a stop. It has 65k on it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Welcome To The Forum, Does the sound get louder at faster speeds?

No, it goes away after a few seconds...

its the clutch fan that is fully engaged on startup and disengages once the PCM gets engine temp readings.

Is the clutch fan going bad? I never heard the noise until recently and have owned the vehicle since new. It now has 65k on it.

I'm not sure, you can take a look at it and see if there is a grease like material coming out of the clutch. Are you getting hotter then normal temperatures? Does it make the noise only at startup or every time you come to a stop? It could be the PCM kicking the fan into high gear cause engine temps are getting warmer then normal.

fan clutch, they can do this during the hot days if you shut down the vehicle and the clutch is engaged, you hear it for a few when restarted.

also check coolant, make sure its full, etc.

Mine definitely does it in the summer when I start the truck with the a/c on. Sounds normal. It goes away after a minute or so.
