So the other day i was on the freeway going about 65 in overdrive and everything seemed fine untill i reached a sign that had 70 MPH written on it. so i gave it enough gas to kick off the lock up, a second later i gave it enough to drop into 3rd but not passing gear. But the rpms shot up because there was no 3rd gear. When i let off it shifted back up and seemed to drive fine.
Then i got off at the next exit and i was forced to pull off the road. this is because after i was going to slow for overdrive to work it just sliped in to free rev, and and it had almost no power. so sitting on the side of the road i found that if i pull it out of park, drop it in to reverce then in to normal drive,2 or 1 i could drive it normal. But unless i was going freeway speeds overdrive is not there, it would just be free rev with almost no movement. So in order to drive it i have to put it in reverce then drop it in gear, and everytime i put it in overdrive and it is not up to highway speed i have to do this too. The fluid level is good. doesent smell bad and it is still fresh.

I am leaning tward an electrical problem rather then a TU tranny. This is because it drives fine in drive but not when it is in overdrive. please help.

Thank you.

Nick

There's nothing electrical about the transmission going into 1st gear with the selector in OD. The only electrical shifts on this transmission are the 3-4 shift and torque converter clutch (TCC) lockup. An electrical fault on this transmission would show up as, "I have the selector in OD, and the car drives fine, but it never shifts past 3rd gear"

I don't have a transmission manual in front of me, but I recall that there were specific failures mentioned for a "forward drive in 1,2,D but no forward drive in OD." Someone might have even posted it here. In any case, you are looking at something inside the transmission.

Sounds as if your front one way clutch may be damaged to me.

anything elce? i still am stumped, but it still drives fine but with no movement in overdrive.
