Alarm lights (False Alarms?)Series Resistor

I just got an auto start and keyless entry put on my 93. I had to have the old alarm removed when they removed it they also took out the red LED that showed the alarm was on and active. I figured that if I wanted some knowledgeable help this is the place to go. Well my question is how would I go about hooking up a fake LED to my truck. I personally think the LED is the biggest part of deterring thieves. What do I need to do I have the old led that was on the alarm but the wires are now cut. Do I need to put a series resistor on if so what wire does that go to + or - and how large of a resistor is needed for this, what size wire? And also what can I wire it to so its only hot when the car is off? Their but be some way to do this, if not can I just put a toggle switch in?

i dont know about resisors but i do know that the wire size plays a big part when it comes to LED's. for every 10 feet of wire you are supposed to increase the guage size. i was helping a friend put in multiple LED's in his car, we extended the wires for the rear with other LED wires and it just didnt work out, the lights konked out shortly. if you were to replace the LED i would imagine that it would come with enough wire.
 












Hey Chuck!

You can just buy a 12 volt LED instead and it should be okay, and then you don't have to get a resistor. If you want it done the right way, then get a Bosch relay, it's very common and has 5 pins: 86, 85, 30, 87, 87a.

85 and 86 are what tell the relay to react. Normally the relay connects to 87a, but when power is run through the relay, it switches to 87.

Therefore, you want the "Accessory" wire connected to 85, and then 86 grounded.

Then you want pin 30 to the LED (with a resistor connected it you don't just buy a 12 volt LED), 87 connected to nothing, and 87a connected to a hot wire.

What will happen is if the car is on, power will run through 85 to 86, switching the relay from 87 to 30. Since nothing is connected to 87, the LED will not turn on.

Once the power in the car is off, the relay will connect 87a to 30 and the hot wired power will run through the LED.

I believe that is all you need, if I missed something, I hope someone will catch my error.

Thanks for the help JTang i went to radio shack to get the Bosch relay they were out of them but should be getting them in shortley. Just wondering about how long, how many hours do you think a small blinking LED could run off of like a D battery? Weeks, Months thanks again

Mm, don't know about that, but the notes I posted were if you wanted to splice into your existing hot wires in the car, so you don't need a battery. Either way, I think it should last you quite a while. If you want to use the battery, which is fine, you'll have to find out if you'll need the resistor and stuff (probably not, but not sure). Is a D battery 12 volts? If you're going to use the D battery, then you'll just connect Pin 30 to the battery to the LED (with the resistor if you need it) back to pin 87a though. I think that should be it. Just pay attention to the + and - of the LED, or buy a couple, so you don't have to run back to Radio Shack for a 20 cent piece! :)
