My 96 apparantly has an alarm system ,factory installed, which armed itself through no action of mine. After a mechanic told me how to reset it with the door key I was able to start the car. My question is, what does the system do to dissable the car? If it can arm itself what else could it do if it is faulty?

It it is factory installed, then it's just a somewhat enhanced keyless entry
Sounds the horn if you open a door and disables the starter, that's pretty much it

That is interesting as until i reset the alarm with the key it would cold crank but not start as if it inhibited the fuel pump or the ignition system.

pats.....?

No PATS on the 96 that I know off, I think it was until 98 that the explorer had it, but I'm not sure, my 97 doesn't have it

Thanks for all of the advice.
I guess I will have to bite the bullet and replace the fuel pump as I dont dare trust it if the alarm system doesn't dissable it.
