all wheel drive problem Ford cant fix

Well my X with 52k miles will be at the ford dealer for 3 weeks as of this coming tuesday. If you step on the gas hard it feels like the trans is shaking. Does this when you hit passing gear to. They replaced the front diff said it was the clutches but they still have vibration when stepping on the gas hard. The service guy said ford is having a problem with the all wheel drive systems. Good thing I bought a new warranty that comes with a rental at no charge. Anybody else have this problem?

well picked it up friday and ford replaced both front axles. still shakes when it is floored. Now it will go back as soon as a FORD engineer flies in.

They're flying in an engineer to look at your truck?! That's pretty cool. Only 'cause I've never heard of it before.

finally fixed

Well the engineer was in a few weeks back(2 weeks before T-giving)and they replaced shift solinods, valve body and some other small stuff. that took about 2 weeks to do. And this did not fix it. Took it in on Monday Dec 4th took another week but now it is finally fixed. Torque converter. The dealer provided a rental car for all the time it was in the shop(7 weeks). And my warrant from Warranty Direct paid for everything. Nothing out of my pocket.

YES u have some incredable service at your dealer...

i was going to say it was the TQ converter, but after reading the entire thread, u knew that already...

BTW how bad was that truck beat on to kill a converter that soon !

Have you ever had the tranny flushed before. ANY other fluid besides MERCON V with cause issues with the torque converters "shuttering" in 5R55w and 4R70w transmissions. Most "lube" places use a fluid thats "compatable" with DextronIII/MerconV but it will cause issues.

didn't i read here about the 4x4 module causing this studdering like feeling? has that already been replaced?

i've got the same thing on a 03 4x4 v8, and in diagnosing if i'd select 4x4 high instead of auto the shaking went away.

The awd's have a problem in the Transfer Case!!!

At about 30k the trans was pulled by Ford to replace a part in the trans. It felt like it had a shift kit in it. That was the last time the fluid was changed. This is my wifes x and she drives very normal. I might drive it once a week but that is it. The only thing I could think of is we moved and we pulled a trailor (6 x 12) about 300 miles loaded about 6 times other than that nothing else. I saw in Consumers Reports that the 04 has a very bad trans. Much worse than average. They are correct.

its not incredible service, messed up stuff like that theyd rather fly someone in than just having the shop foreman or whoever just toss thousands of dollars of parts into it(which they have already done), if it was a squeak or rattle they might not bother. Might be a safety issue

30+? Years ago my brand new Lincolns brakes were screwed up. Ford flew a expert in because no one could figure just what was wrong. He left shaking his head and I finally found out what it was. I was riding the brake with my left foot and running out of brakes. Something you do not want to do with any power brake system.

finally fixed again

Well still shaking. The converter fixed the problem for a week. After it was brought up about the 4x4 module I printed out some of the forums and brought them up to Ford. They had it a week and the provided a rental again and they changed out the module and it is good to go now. The only problem now is my wife.. The rental car was a 2007 Nissan Titan crew cab and she loves it. And I must say the x is nice but what a difference. So the x will be going up for sale soon. Thanks for all the help.

It appears my 03 XLT has a similar problem. I've dealt with it for a little while now, but I finally scheduled it with Ford. This morning I put it into 4X4 High, and it didn't shutter. I then put it in park, switched to 4X4 Auto, and it still didn't shutter. However, when I start it and put into drive in Auto, it will always shutter at acceleration. It lasts for 2-3 seconds and then it goes away. It happens alot on turns as well, but I'm accelerating on turns, so I think it would do it whether I'm turning or going straight.

The guy at Ford told me that it's not the transmission, and if it was, it would do it more often than just at acceleration. He doesn't think it's 4X4 module, but he wants to look closer since I told him it doesn't seem to shutter in High. He's convinced it's a rear differential clutch problem, which he told me was common in the 02, 03, 04, and 05 XLT AWD's. That would be about $1,000 to fix, and if that is the case...I'm thankful to have my extended warranty (purchased through CarMax).

You can get the 4X4 module for about half of that amount and install it yourself.
