2002 XLT 4.6L...anybody ever replace the alternator bearings? That is really the only thing that goes on the alternator (hence rebuilds). Just wondering if anybody here has done it before. I can't imagine it being any more complex than changing the bearings on a DC motor.

Would be nice to know the bearing sizes before hand...probably a 6002/3 or something like that.

Actually, the bearings are not all that goes bad. The brushes, and diodes can also go bad. If it gets too hot, the dielectric that insulates & separates the windings, can short. On my factory alt, the diodes, had gone bad. It was charging, but at a lower voltage. Too low to charge the battery. You would be better off to get a replacement alt. Someone, here, said they bought an Autozone alt that lasted twice as long as their factory alt.

Or, you can get this one. Cheaper than OEM. BETTER than OEM. And, more output, than OEM. With a two year warranty. https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/2004~Ford~Explorer~4.0L-V6/7768-6k-185-oem.html
