Hi, this may seem a dumb question, but how do I identify what type of alternator I have on my 1998 explorer 4.0 SOHC.

I live in the UK & the alternator has packed up, I have tried a number spare shops for a replacement, but they all want a number from the alternator casing. I've got the alternator out but there are no number's anywhere.

Is it just a case of specifying if its a 95 amp or 130 amp model, or is there something i am missing?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Kev
You'd be just as well to get a used one, then get that one rebuilt.
If you can find a decent alt and starter workshop it should only cost about £60-£80 to get yours back in good health (I recently got one rebuilt for a sabb that the dealer wanted 328 for and cheapest supplier for rebuilt unit i found was 150, both exchange so i got the original rebuilt for £60).
For a used one pm chrisquelch on here. He is based in Fareham and a good guy. He breaks exs and will get one out to you as quick as you need.
If he can't help you call justin at explorerpartsuk 07921823310.
Also come say hi to the uk guys in the Uk section in clubs.
Regards
