Hey guys.

I'm almost ready to install. First I need to upgrade the alternator b/c it only puts out 130 amps... which isn't bad but I was told I will need around 200-225. I called this electronics place around here and they said that I couldn't have it rewired and that a new amp would be 895. I told the guy he was out of his mind. Anyone know if you can re-wire a 2000 XLT 130 amp alternator? If not, where can I buy a high power alt. for this thing?

Thanks,
Joe

130 amps is pretty damn good. Do you honestly need that much power? You will loose some horsepower too.

yeah well i wish i new how to do that, i only got about 600 watts RMS in mine and when i have it loud an the sub hits the lights all dim and the eingine RPM's drop. i think thats what led to my alternator takin a s**t!:thumbdwn:

How about putting a bigger pulley on the alt to make it spin faster? How about those large Caps that stereo pros use? Aren't they supposed to store power so you can hit those lows without stalling your X?

Wouldn't a smaller pulley make it spin faster? Because compared to a regular sized pulley, with the same length of belt passing over the pulley in a given amount of time, the smaller pulley will rotate more times since it has a smaller circumference... Actually I was thinking about that earlier today. Finding a smaller pulley and placing it on my alternator and then getting longer bolts and spacing the alternator out a small distance to pick up the resulting slack in the belt.... Seems to me that if this was done sucessfully, the alternator would spin faster at all engine speeds. Right now when I stop at a stoplight my battery gauge drops to the middle and my lights dim slightly because the alternator is not spinning fast enough to keep the electrical system fully charged... Repulleying the alternator could potentially solve this problem! I am going to look into it more.

Listen...

When it really comes down to it I need the inside of the alt. rewired for more amps. All the caps and batteries in the world won't do **** except allow short bursts. I want continuous high power for continuous bass. I'm running about 2200 watts RMS.

So... I was asking if anyone knew whether or not this guy at the electronics place was full of **** and if you could rewire a 2000 XLT Alt. If I can't, anyone know where I can get a high power alt that will fit for a reasonable price?

Thanks

i know mean grean makes like a 200 or 250 amp alternator for the older explorers....check them out... summit, jegs, or jc whotney carries it..not sure which one though

Good lord man! 2200 RMS? Are you putting in an Audiobahn 34" or something?

Well here's my system....

KENWOOD eXcelon KFC-X688C 6x8 2-WAY 220W rear 55 rms

KENWOOD CD/MP3 RECEIVER z828 Full Bandwidth Power (less than 1% THD): 22 Watts x 4
Maximum Output Power: 47 Watts x 4
Preouts: Front, Rear, Non-Fading (Gold-Plated) 4.5V

2001 Rockford Fosgate Punch 800.2 AMP - 2 of these
2x 400W amp

INFINITY Kappa 5x7" Car SPEAKERS 572.3cf front 2-100 rms 300W max
Comes with 2 small external x-overs

Lightning Audio 150 Watt Car Stereo Amplifier
2x50W at 4 Ohms (my speakers are 4 Ohms) will power the fronts

NEW PROFILE 400SX CAR AUDIO SPEAKER AMPLIFIER PAID
100 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms for rear speakers

2 15 solo barics powered by the 2 800W amps

As you can see... I need a better alternator. Can you tell me if those places that were recommended for alts have websites?:bounce: :bounce:

I'm with Joe... I'll be running about 2300 watts RMS, (Two Audiobahn Alum12xs, AT61s, and an ABC5002 component set) and am getting a 200 amp alternator as well... But mine is an older model 4.0, and I know where to get a 200 amp for those. But for the 5.0, I have no idea.

joe. from you post describing your system i can only get 1900 watts rms. is there anything else.

why do you have more power on the rear speakers than the front?

and check out www.mralternator.com
they have pretty cheap 200 amp alternators. for my explorer it cost $225.

in your other thread, you said that your subs are dual 4 ohm voice coils. this means your RF amps wont put out 800 watts. you will only get 400 watts from each (200 X 2). that means that your systems output will only be 1100 watts. you probably dont need an alternator upgrade. your stock 130 amp alternator can handle that. just get a cap to handle the short deep bass bursts.

amp

the amp is 400 watts x 2 at 2 ohms, so isn't that 800 at 2 ohms because it's 400x2 at 2 ohms? this is frustrating.

joe

your subs are dual 4 ohm voice coil subs. you can wire both to one amp @ 4 ohms mono and get 800 watts rms.

if you use two amps you'll only get 400 watts rms out of each for a total of 800 watts rms. so it is just a waste of money to have two. i'll explain:
your amp is not stable to 2 ohms mono, so you have to wire the sub @ 8 ohms mono. at 8 ohms, you amp will put out 400 watts rms. if you have 2 amps with one sub on each, then that is 800 watts total. it's the same amount of power if you just hook up both subs to one amp @ 4 ohms mono.

so to recap:

800 watts for the subs
200 watts for rear speakers
100 watts for front speakers
= 1100 watts total

i think you wont need an alternator upgrade. just throw a good cap on the subwoofer amp just in case.

and-- i recommend you put the 100X2 amp on the fronts and the 50X2 on the rears. the front stage is most important and should sound the best and loudest.

What about this?

The subs each have two pos and neg terminals. Could I were the two sets (pos and negs) separately and run 400 on each from one amp?

Joe

that doesnt change the impedance. those are for each voice coil. your best bet is to wire those posts in series (connect one positive to one negative, then connect the remaining pos and neg to the amp bridged) this makes an 8 ohm mono load. then if you do the same to the other speaker, and hook it up to the same amp bridged (the subs are ran together parallel now), this makes a 4 ohm mono load. now you will get 800 watts rms out of this amp.

subs are meant to be wired mono. you can do it in stereo, but you'll lose some bass due to the different channels.

dammit

Now what do I do? I have these two brand new solo 15's that I can't get the max out of. Dual 2 Ohms are the same damn price. What would you guys do? Can I exchange them somehow? I bought them from EBAY. I'm not settling for 400 watts to each.

It's either that or I upgrade to two bd1000.1 amps. I WANT IT LOUD!!! what is the better idea?

see if you can exchange them for dual 2 ohm voice coil subs. then each can be wired as a 4 ohm mono load. then you could give each subwoofer 800 watts with it's own amp. that's the best way to go. good luck:)

wooo hoo!!!

The guy I bought the amps from forgot to ship them! The order got lost! I was all pissed this morning and he said he would ship this afternoon. I called him later today when I found out I could only get 400 watts each, he said he still didn't ship and is getting the bd1000.1's in!!! He's going to send me two of those instead for the same price!!!

I am a lucky *******.
