am i getting screwed?

Someone please help. I took my '93 XLT in and new the front brakes needed work. I wanted to get the Haynes manual and do it myself, but didn't have the time. After examination, the shop says the rotors are shot too (i can understand that) and wants $360.00 for new pads, rotors and labor. The explanation from them is that it will take them over 2 hours to disassemble the 4x4 hubs and then work on the brakes.

Does this seem like a reasonable estimate, and if I do get the Haynes manual, how hard of a job is it.

Any info. is appreciated.

2 hrs. for a shop estimate doesn't sound outrageous. Check the auto part stores to see what rotors/pads and bearing grease would cost you. Then add in what your time is worth (if it is your first time, it will take a while), then decide if it is worth it.

If you want to do it yourself, the members of this forum will be glad to walk you through it. Even though I think there is a post with a step by step in it.

No question you could do it yourself easily, but that estimate doesn't sound outrageous. If it makes you feel better get some other estimates before you decide what to do.

I paid 500 bucks last time for a full brake job including new rotors. That $360 doesn't sound bad at all!

Most of the places I worked usually charge $100 for a front brake job. That price includes pads and labor to repack the wheel bearings. But that's only on a 2wd. On a 4wd. it costs an additional $30 labor, plus you have to add in the price of the seals $15-20 (est.) x2 and since your rotors are shot there's another $70-80 (est.) x2. This brings the total to $200-220. Now this price can varry as much as $100 depending on what the shop labor rate is and how they break down their pricing, but I think you should be able to get the job done for under $250.
