i didn't take any pictures of the process of removing the rear interior piece. if you want to do this and dont' yet own a haynes or chilton's manual go buy one before you start (you'll need it for something else anyways).

1. follow the directions in you haynes to remove the stock plastic piece on the passenger side rear. take your time with each piece so you don't scratch the plastic.

2. unplug the two harnesses from the factory amp

3. cut back the tape aways back from the harness and expose the wires.

4. clip the connectors off (you can see them sitting there in the pics)

5. strip each wire

6. connect them as shown in the picture with the colors on them. the small slashes designate what the wires look like. the darker slash designates that is the wire from the other side of the amp which connects.

7. solder and tape

8. put it all back together.

these pictures are of a 1995 with the base model stereo- but the same holds true on my 96 as well.

and here is the page showing which wires go together

once again this is from a 1995- but it works on my 1996 as well.

if you can get the colors in the doors and have a aftermarket hu you can do this. just use the harness in the dash to figure out what color the wires are for each door when they leave the hu and go to the amp- and connect away.

I didnt bypass my amp and my stereo sounds fine. Maybe I'm not running enough juice or something. What exactly does bypassing the amp do?

most aftermarket decks put out ten times as much clean power as the stock amp. if you run the wires through the stock amp you are reducing the amount of power (and how clean the signal is) of the signal going to your speakers.

the car i did this in today has a pioneer 6400 hu and type s alpine 5 by 7s. the difference was night and day before and after

Oh, I have a JVC SH707. Should I do this? I still have stock speakers. Will putting more power to them hurt them?

which stock system do you have?

I dont know. It was a CD player. No stock sub.

those speakers are awful man- i used to have them. i say do the bypass and at least buy some cheapo speakers from pioneer or sony or someone. just 5 by 7s in the 50-100 dollar range per pair would make all the difference in the world
