Similar to the question asked on 7/20.
My wife has a 2004 Explorer 2WD. Upon slowing down and while the transmission is down-shifting from 2nd to 1st, more often than not is when the clunking sound is heard. It sounds like it is coming from the rear portion of the car. It doesn't happen when up shifting. It's gotten worse (harder and louder "clunk") over the past couple of months.
Additionally, when the car is at a stop and then when the car is shifted into either a forward gear or reverse it takes a split second (or maybe more) for what seems like the transmission to "sync up" with the drive shaft. I've been driving cars for 37 years and this is the only car where I've had these types of transmission/drive train issues.
