Hi folks
I've just got a 97 Explorer. My first, and it's used--No I didn't buy a brand new 97 off the lot just now.

I've searched the forum and found problems that seem very similar to my driver's side door lock not working:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=201556
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//archive/index.php/t-133963.html

Summary: Probably a damaged wire in the door's "black barrel". (I'm unable to open this at the moment to check if that's the case)

But what I'm hoping for some clairifaction on is the following:

The "lock all" button seems to lock all of the other doors, just not the driver's door itself.
Manually pushing down / depressing the lock knob doesn't move it much--depresses maybe a quarter inch--and it doesn't lock the door either. So there's basically no way to lock the driver's side door. (Sure I'll post a link to Yahoo! Maps with driving directions to my house later.) Of course, after pressing the "lock all" button, the car thinks it's locked, so opening the door results in the alarm going off.

This all leads me to believe it is not a minor wiring problem but rather a mechanical one, which I'm probably not capable of diagnosing or fixing myself.

But maybe I'm wrong, and the "manual" lock knob is just a switch which is connected to the same broken circuit, but I would think not.

Thanks for any help.

nope... your problem is mechanical. Your best bet is removing the panel on a good door as well as the bad door. Hit the lock button and observe... it will quickly become evident what wrong with the linkage on the bad door. likely causes are linkage and the infamous "spring" breakage near the latching mechanism.

I just had this issue.... Mine was a broken spring.
