OK, So after the fiasco of my last look at a used explorer, I have been continuing in my search, driving hundreds of miles, and looking at tens of vehicles.

Rust buckets, mosquito killers, parts donors, and the like.

I run across an ad on Cars.com (or was it autotrader.com?) for a 1994 explorer at a major Ford dealer near my home, and decide to give them a call. (price not listed) the salesman tells me it's at the auction, as they usually don't keep, or try to sell cars that old, and usually dump them off at auction, but, if it doesn't sell there, he'll call me back the next day.

Sure enough, the next day he calls back. "Mr. Dukes, the Explorer didn't bring what we wanted, so if you're still interested, we brought it back."

So I hop in the Vic, and jet down there, (about 45 miles). whip in the lot, around to the back, and sitting there all dressed up like a prom date in a slinky black dress is a very nice '94 explorer. REALLY nice explorer.

Dude comes running out, and I mean RUNNING! with the keys, chattering like a kindergartener that has just learned his ABC's.

So I look it over. They OBVIOUSLY haven't cleaned it up yet, but it still looks pretty damned good for it's age, ODO shows 34k, but dude says it's 134k....I kinda figured that.

Looking closely at the drivers door, I can just make out the "U.S. Cavalry Store" logo on it. (You guys have seen the catalogs) Hmmmm. seems this baby was a business vehicle for them at one time. Stickers have been removed, but if you look closely, you can still make it out.

It's dusty, very dusty, but not dirty. I raise the hood, and it's REALLY dusty under there! No biggie really.

Stab the key in and she fires over really nicely and purrs like a swiss watch! Impressive. Hop in to take it for a spin. It drove like a dream. plenty of power, trans shifted perfectly, ALL windows and door locks worked, all gauges worked, as did the stereo, and the A/C.

The Headliner had a big hole right in the middle, and was sagging, but with everything else being so good, I can overlook that.

As we're going down the road, I start looking for the "4x4" and "4Lo" buttons.....none. nowhere. I ask dude what gives? (I thought it was advertised as 4x4)

He says "Oh, it's All Wheel Drive" WHAT???? Ummmm in '94? Hmmmmm. again.

So I get 'er back to the lot, walk around and kneel down in front, and guess what?

TWO WHEEL DRIVE!............. SONOFABITCH!

Asking price? $1,300 cash. I told 'em no thanks, I needed 4x4.
I said it'd cost me at least twice that much to convert it.

I offered a grand, plus THEY pay taxes, title, all fees, yadda yadda yadda. (figured I'd give it a shot)

They didn't bite.....This was Friday.

Dude Calls me this morning at work and says he'll take $1,300 and he'll pay all the taxes, title, yadda yadda yadda....... "sorry 'bout yer luck pal, it ain't what I am lookin' for!"

So guys (and girls) the search continues. Considering a 200+ mile drive to Baltimore, OH this weekend to look at another one. SHEESH these first gens are hard to come by. Ones that aren't garbage anyway.

Anyway, if anyone is looking for a SUPER NICE 2WD 4dr. $1,300 cash, I know where one is at. Tri County Ford, Radcliff, KY.

Anyway, that's enough for tonight. to bed with me, 3:30AM comes awfully early. Tomorrow I will weave the tale of my 175 mile round trip this past Saturday to look at TWO, count 'em TWO pieces of junk!~

You need a 4x4 in KY? What it snows done there? What 1 or 2 " Then its 80 the next day. :p:

While it's true it doesn't snow here that often, we still get snow here.

More often than not it's ice. This past year we got 8" of snow one day, in Jan. or Feb. and then in March we got 15" !

I work at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, (Home of the SuperDuty) and they DO NOT believe in "snow days" your ass had better be there, no matter what.
It's a 45 mile one way trip for me down winding backcountry roads. What is usually a 50 minute drive took me three hours that day in March in my Crown Vic.

So, while I don't need 4x4 that often, when I need it, I NEED it. For the first time in my life, I find myself without a 4x4 of some kind, and I don't like it.

Besides, I do occasionally like to do the "offroad" thing.:D
