Since nobody has any ideas from my previous post about the thumping noise in my 02 explorer XLS, let me ask you guys and gals this. Can a faulty ABS sensor in the front wheels cause the 4X4 to malfunction? Can it cause the 4 wheel auto to engage and disengage for no reason?

Yes if there is a abs concern this will deactivate the 4x4, this is becasue the abs uses the wheel speed sensors and if they are faulty the 4x4 dosent know have fast the vehicle is moving. They are very related and depend on eachother

So if your speed sensors in the rear read 25mph and the left front is reading 6mph the 4x4 auto is asuming the rear wheels are slipping engaging the 4x4 auto. Im almost 100% sure you have a bad wheel sensor or a broken tooth on the tone ring

Thanks for the quick reply. That is what I was thinking as well. I am getting a slight growl from the front end when in 4X4 and from what I have read, this could be a wheel hub and that can lead to ABS failure. My ABS light is on. I hope this is it and not a transmission or transfer problem.

Just replaced that last year at this time. The 4X4 high and low engages fine. The problem seem to be restricted to the Auto 4X4.

I can help... First go to your back near the ebrake spring and check the wires.. they rub open there alot due to ebrake spring on the cable.. its on the drivers side just above your rear axle....

Lookin good? ok go up front and before you buy a hub or something pricey like that take out the abs sensor and clean it up real good and put it back in check plug make sure its clean and see how it runs then.... get a the code.. abs is priceyyyyy stuff... good luck my friend.. mine was the back cable issue
