96 4cyl 4R44E 2-3 flare at low rpm?

I searched briefly for any posts with the same problem that am having, but I didnt see one. I just bought a 96 4cyl automatic Ranger. I didnt notice at first but now I notice a 2-3 flare shift. NO O/D light flashing. It is mainly cold but not only cold. Mostly noticed at a very light acceleration, Like when the trans shifts to third at 20 to 25 mph. and maybe just a little at moderate to heavy acceleration. After warmup, It shifts fine at moderate to heavy, and flares intermittantly at a very light accel. I had found an unopened qt of type F fluid behind the seat and I know that is not the right fluid. There is no leaks an the fluid is real clean. I bought it from an older woman, probably not a do-it yourselfer. I am an ASE mastertech with 25yrs exp with imports so dont be afraid to be too technical. Thanks, C-MAC

I was told by a Ford Tech who used to rome on here that the wrong fluid will not kill your tranny, it will just change the shifts and act a little differently. Although over a long period of time who knows? I put 6 quarts of Type-F in my 99 EX, and 4 quarts of "Automotic Tranny Fluid":) in my ex-wifes (money grubbin *****, i sold the van) 2002 Dodge GC. I pulled the Valve Body out of my EX so many times i went through about 25 quarts of Mercon V so i figure i got it all out of there. I flushed the Caravan however, i left the fluid in there for a few months and noticed considerable changes in the shifts, continually shifting around 3000 rpms under normal driving conditions. You didnt mention if you have changed the fluid yet or have done any service yourself? As far as the 4R44E im no help there. Sorry, figured youd at least like to hear from somebody......chime in people

No, I havn't changed the fluid. Since my last post I found a receipt for a trans flush and there is a BG sticker under the hood.I imagine they used the BG conditioner. I have used and performed BG services at the dealership I worked for for years. I hear that the conditioner does wonders for torque converter shutter, but I still dont know what fluid they used.

Brooklyn, Will the type f cause the flare I'm having? Also I should use merconV, correct?
Thanks, Chris
