I've been searching threads, but didn't find the answer I'm looking for. I bought a '96 4.0 4wd A/T Explorer from a co-worker who's mechanic told him the trans needed a $1k rebuild. Paid $200.00 bucks for the truck and put a new gear on the new sensor I bought and everything operates as it should. Turns out the old sensor is fine, the gear was bad. The teeth are concaved on one side. I'm worried the drive gear in the transfere case is worn badly and the new gear won't last long. No big deal at $4.28 for another one, but I'd like to know whats involved in replacing the internal drive gear. Am I correct that I can pull the back half of the transfere case to get to it? Thanks in advance.
