I have a 94-explorer and for the last week I've been having anti-freeze leaking on my drive way i thought it was coming from the water pump but it looks like it's coming from the left side under the altenator any help would be greatly appreciated , hte motor in my explorer is a 4.0 v6
The architecture of the engine bay is different after 94, but this might help. I recently had a small coolant leak coming from the heater control valve. It's a small part (about 1.5" x 1.5" x 2") located by the A/C and heater stuff. It's shaped kind of like a bonbon: a domed cylinder. If this is the cause, it's very easy to fix. Hope this helps!
My first guess would be loose hose clamps on the upper radiator hose. They can come loose over time. Is it cold where you live? Extreme cold can contract everything to start leaks.
Another possibility would be the crimp of the plastic tank of the radiator to the core. I had two of these go bad in the past, both times when it was real cold out. If this happens, the only course of action is to replace the radiator.
Check the heater hose connections to the water pump.
Another not so good possibility is a blown head gasket or head itself. How many miles on the motor? Also check the freeze plugs.
i had the same problem on my 92 turned out the plastic sides of the radiator had developed a leak on the side , a new radiator fixed the problem but it wasnt cheap.
I Have a 94 4.0 also and mine is leaking like crazy im going through about a gallon a week. At first I thought mine was coming from the water pump too, but its deffinantly no that. I have a couple of people look at it and that cant seem to tell me where its comming from thier best guess was the Lower Intake manifold gasket.
When i was Reading your post I saw that somone stated the I could be the heater control valve
this is the first Ive heard of that Im gonna check that when i get home.
Where excatally do you see antifreeze on you motor or the area its dripping from?
The heater control valve leak is pretty common, says the dealer. While my 95 4.0 was in the dealer for recall work on the sway bar end links, they went over the usual trouble spots to try & make up the loss. They pointed out the valve and said they go all the time. I said if they go all the time, like the bloody end links, they are faulty should be recalled. You can guess where that got me. It is a very minor leak so it can wait to be fixed till we ever have a warm weekend.
It's the combination of extreme weather and bad radiator. Under severe weather conditions plastic shrinks and your radiator leaks. I have the same thing on mine. I also have 94. Every time I start it up I get some coolant on my garage floor or driveway in the same spot you indicated. Funny thing is that after it warms up there is no leak. At least I didn't notice any missing coolant. I had the same thing on my 93 before. Had to replace the radiator. Try a few places before you buy though and just replace it yourself when the weather is appropriate.
