Can someone PLEASE tell me how to disconnect the ABS in my 97 Sport? From past experience in my 93 XLT.... I want them disconnected! My 93 absolutely sucked in the snow (when it came to stopping) so I'm hoping my Sport does better. Anyone else have their ABS disconnected? Is it better or worse?

The ABS in my '99 works really well. It is very responsive to changes in traction... I'm sure it is alot better than the 93's

He's refering to stopping in the snow, I don't know how much snow you get down there in Tampa :P

Antilock brakes are unbeatable on dry and rain soaked roads and gravel, and they work extremely well in my 2000 model. Now snowy and icy roads, that is a whole different animal! Antilock brakes SUCK on snowy and icy roads. Both my Cadillac and my Explorer, do more antilocking than braking on snow packed roads.

I have found that I can stop better by pumping the brakes myself, than the computer. Now having said that, if something happens that you have to SLAM on your brakes on either dry, wet, or snowy roads, you are better to have them, (especially in snow), as you can steer around that object, vs. turning the wheel and still heading straight, as the front wheel are sliding on the snow. So.....I would recommend leaving the anti-lock feature enabled. You are better off WITH them, than without in the end. You can always pump the pedal yourself to slow down, rather than letting the computer do it.

I don't know how pumping it yourself can be better than the computer pumping it 10 times more (atleast)! You need the ABS brakes the most in snowy condition. We get a lot of snow here in NY and having ABS saved me atleast three times. The last one, I remember, was when I was approaching a stop sign entering a major 4 lane road. I hit the brakes, felt the ABS pumping, and the truck stopped a little longer than my nerves were comfortable with but it stopped me nonetheless before the intersection. I am convinced without it I would've been in the middle of that intersection free for all cars in all directions to hit me.

Yes, I was referring to stopping/sliding on snow covered roads but.....Oswap, I am not a HE! *wink*
And PA has some hellish winters!

Hrrmmm *mental note: Look at people's usernames before using gender comments* It's been properly noted :P

i realize this is a stupid question but is that my ant-lock brakes when i push down when i'm sliding on snow and the pedal pumps real fast by itself?

Yep. That's the one. When it stops pulsating is when you know ABS is not working.
