Anti-Theft chip in the keys

my friend lost the keys to his 99 ranger and he says that there isnt a chip in the key for anti theft and i told him im pretty sure there is...cause someone told me there was on my 99 explorer sport and thta the key would be a fair chunk of change to replace if lost...also on my 99 f150 the corner was broken off of it and it looked mike there was soemthign in it but i never got into findign out what it was...so alls im askign is is there a micro chip in the key for anti theft

there is a chip in my 2000 explorer. took 2 hours and ~$230 to buy a key and fob, and have the key programmed.
 






If he has the 2.5L 4 cylinder Ranger it does not have the PATS transponder key system.

I hope you had 2 keys made then added a 3rd. Once you have 2 keys you can easily add another key. My 1985 B2 has that system. I only had one key so i bought 4 more on E-Bay (2 pairs) and then programmed them all. Now if i were to lose one it would not be a problem.
 












I was lucky with my 04 sport track..the Dealer could not find my keys when i went to pick it up from a service...they cut me a third key...now my wife an i and the truck all have one...FYI
