97 explorer XLT 6 cyl
Ok, I have a 97 explorer xlt 6 cyl. 125k. Use 4wd minimally. went to beach this year 4wd did not work. Turn on switch and lights WORK AND DO NOT BLINK. Took to garage thought it was shift motor put new one on and same thing 4wd did not work. put old one back on, he said ther is power going to the motor. Now heres the kicker. When vehicle sets overnite and I start it in the morning turn on 4wd and it works everytime but only for about 10 minutes of driving. If you have it engaged after 10 minutes it will disengage. Or if you keep turning the switch off and on during that 10 minute driving period it will will engage every time, then after 10 minutes it will stop. Seems like something is heating up and then thats it it's done till the morning again. If it was motor then new one should have worked. Any ideas, and where the heck is the 4wd relay at?????? Not behind side passengers kick plate, not by jack behind seat, don't see it behind glove box... want to swap one at salvage yard before spending $$ for brand new one. Thanks!!

Are you looking for the relay or just the GEM? Use the search box and type in shift motor. You'll fing a good rebuild thread with some links to diagnostics. I know you tried a "new" shift motor but it sounds most likely. Probably a position sensor though it could be several other things. The motor may be getting lost and reverting to 2WD.

The "relay" in believe you are looking for is in the back driverside behind the interior panel. My experience is with 98 and later TCs. Your 97 is slightly different so it takes me a while to research sometimes.

Are you talking about 4x4 high or low not working?

they both work , and then both do not work after 10 minutes
