Tons.

1. Florence Junction (practically an offroad park)

2. Table Mesa Road (practically another offroad park, but mostly extreme)

3. White Tanks Mountains

4. Superstition Mountains

5. Apache Junction

6. Crown King

7. Sedona - Particularily Broken Arrow

8. ...

These are just the ones near and around Phoenix. There are plenty more that I am not mentioning and in other places in the state.

We are planning a group trip sometime in March or Feb talked about in another thread. We would love for you to join us.

Hey Thanks for the info, and the offer. Ill have to see when you guys are going to see if i can go. But my X is still stock so i dont know if i would be able to make the trails.

There a many trails at those locations that stock Explorers are capable of. You would be surprised what a stock Explorer can do.

Go to the main page and look at the Arizona Run photos. They were taken last year during the Crown King and Coke Ovens runs. We had several stock Explorers on each run. Everyone made it through. There is a nice trail about 4 miles north of my house off of Usary Pass (Ellsworth). It is Bulldog Canyon. You need to pick up a free permit for the gate combination at the Mesa Parks & Recreation office in downtown Mesa. It is good for 6 months. There is one way to go that wouldn't be bad for a stock Explorer. There is only one high ledge that might be somewhat difficult. There is another way that you can go that comes out in Apache Junction and it would be much more difficult for a stock Explorer. The last time I took that route I was with a Mazda B4000 4x4 that wouldn't go into 4x4 since his shift solenoid was rusted from his last trip through the Verde River. He had a difficult time in several places mostly due to lack of the front wheels pulling. I had to pull him up one gravel incline. The rest of the areas he just blasted on his own.

I have a question about the White Tanks though. Where can you off-road around there? About 4 years ago I drove all over the area trying to find a place to go 4-wheeling but couldn't find any place that was legal.

The White Tanks is a maze, I admit and finding trails is very difficult. I grew up on that side of town and my buddies and I have found a few trails. We haven't explored as much as we would like. The trails that we have found are off of Miller Road. Its on the far south side of the mountains (I think). I don't know if any of the trails out there have names, at least any to my knowledge. Its been a while since I have been out there. Now you have been interested in going out there again. :D My Explorer is far more capable than the last time I went out there. Hmmm, may have to go one of these following weekends. I'll do a more thorough scouting trip. Anybody interested in going with?

On my honeymoon with my wife in '01, we stopped for the day in Sedona and wanted to 'hike' around for an afternoon. We stopped in this bookstore called, "The Worm" and one book that stared me in the face was, "Backcountry Adventures - Arizona [The ultimate guide to the Arizona Backcountry for anyone with a Sport Utility Vehicle]." This book set me back $35, but the next time I'm in Arizona, I'll be prepared. We didn't hit any trails, because we were driving in my wife's mildly-prepped Jeep Wrangler with 2.5" Rancho lift and 31's - and may I mention, "I'm not allowed to scratch the paint!"
This book covers all of the state, and contains GPS points, and levels of difficulty, and scenic quality, etc. You'll be impressed. I also bought the "Southern California" edition, and I'll get the Colorado, Utah, and Northern California editions when I have the $110 in cash...

Excellent book.
