So I was underneath the car just giving a look over on everything while I was down there replacing u joint and right on the frame where the front gas tank strap is I found this extremely rusted broken off bolt head. It’s a weird head to the bolt...it’s completely round and almost looks like a coin. Anybody know what this is and where it came from?

Huh yeah you’re right. Well I’m not missing any lug nut studs on any of my wheels so I wonder where it came from?

Do the gas tank straps have studs? Or anything else in the area where you found it?

I’ll have to double check tomorrow but when I felt around on the bolt for the strap it didn’t feel like anything was missing

Maybe not missing now ….. Maybe cut out previousy and replaced? I would suspect this would be from fuel tank straps, which have to be released to replace fuel pump, which is fairly common issue. Just guessing.

Please let us know how this is resolved.

My guess is that it was kicked up from the highway and found a home wedged under your Explorer.

hey guys, sorry about the delayed response it’s been a crazy busy week and I kept meaning to get on here with an update but kept spacing it out.

So as far as I can tell this rusted part of bolt/stud somehow managed to kick itself up onto my crossmember from somewhere else. The gas tank strap bolts all were fine and not broken. I guess possibly it could have been from an old bolt that was on the gas tank straps because i did have a fuel pump replaced a couple years back and I was out of town visiting family and so i had a shop do it (normally I would have done it myself it just didn’t play into the cards on that trip) so it might have been from that but it just doesn’t seem like the type of fastener to be used for the straps. It’s not like the ones on there now...

Well done, and thanks for the follow up!
