I have a 2000 xlt 4.0l V6 SOHC...the problem is that it sounds like a diesel tractor. I was able to narrow the problem down to the lifters by putting honey oil in the motor... It sounded much better... now the sound is back and it comes and goes... any ideas on how much this might cost to get fixed? would appreciate any input...thanks!

Lifters?

lifter(s)...either that or a rod is bend in the motor... This is what I have gotten from two mechanics, I am sure it is the lifter in the engine though.

I would run, not walk away from a mechanic that told you about lifters.

Good luck ....

Does the cam set on the valves? If not, then there are rockers, and followers, which some people consider lifters. LOL,

Okay...well it would be a bit more helpful if someone would acctually anwser the question besides telling me what they are called...I repeated exactly what I was told... any suggestions on why my truck sounds like a diesel tractor?

your muffler bearing is broken and needs to be replaced with a synthetic teflon coated one

You were told to replace something the SOHC motor does not even have. Now thats a quality mechanic(s).

I do not believe I have? I will look into that. what exactly is it?

do a search for more details but it involves a rattle in the engine that if I am not mistaken comes from a faulty timing chain.

Free replacement, call Ford with your vin # to see if you have had it done.
