Whining engine noise, any ideas?

When I start up my explorer (1995 4.0L OHV motor with 110K on it), among other noises, there is a whining noise that gets somewhat quieter once the engine warms up. I've removed the serpentine belt to see if it was an accessory making the noise, and the noise was still there. I'm afraid its the crank bearings whining, but I'm not enough of an expert to be sure. ANyone else have any experiences with this type of problem? ANy responses are most appreciated!!
