If you're going to go down this road...set your goals:

-How much power you want

-How much you're willing to spend

-What your intended use for the truck is (offroading, street driving, street/strip, towing, etc.)

For example, if you want a little more power for towing, offroading, or daily driving....that's going to take a different (and less expensive) approach than say, if you want something that will run 14's in the quarter mile.

Based on this, I can give you advice on what's worked for me or other people, how much it cost, and what NOT to spend your money on :)

Got your pm.

K&N FIPK is a good place to start.

A catback exhaust would be your next logical mod. Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Gibson....all give the same results pretty much it's just a matter of what kind of sound you want.

Next after that I'd go with a larger throttle body. I know BBK used to make one (66mm). Explorer Express I think still sells one too.

After that, get a tuner or chip from Bamachips.

All of the above will help.

Still not enough? Get an upgraded camshaft. Compcams makes one called 49-410-8 that you can swap in without changing valve springs and will give a HUGE improvement. You will also need 5.550" pushrods from www.pushrods.net. You can swap the cam with the engine in the truck and the heads still on the motor.

You might next look at a Zex nitrous kit part #82011....keep it to a 75hp shot and you'll be safe and good to go.

That pretty much covers it without tearing into the heads or motor too much. You can do all these mods yourself...the hardest being the camshaft swap....which you can do in a weekend if you take it slow. All of these mods complement each other and you can do them over time. As far as cost, you should be able to easily do all of the above for less than 2 grand if you shop around. If you know right away you're going to do the cam and/or nitrous I'd wait to get your tuner/chip after those mods so it can be set up to take advantage of them. You don't need to upgrade your injectors with the setup I listed above either.

If you're going to be using nitrous heavily or going further than this, I'd invest in a set of Borla, BBK, or JBA headers also. They were worth 15 hp/torque on my motor. If you aren't using a power adder then probably not worth it. They are also a hassle to install, unless you pull the heads or the motor.

Don't buy:tornado air thing, throttle body spacer, etc. They don't work.

as far as the cam goes does it matter if its ohv or sohc bc really interested in one

redneck2010:

WHAT?

Of course it matters!

One motor has 1 cam.

One motor has 2 cams.

One is an very old design, pushrod motor, decent power, but inefficient.

One is newer, computer designed motor, more power, WAY more efficient.

What motor do you have? What do you want that motor to do for you?

Ryan

iv got the 4.0 ohv but on the cam "Compcams makes one called 49-410-8 that you can swap in" will that go in the ohv or just the sohc. i want just an easy upgrade for some more power. but my dads a mechanic and he says it all good i just got to buy all the seals and gaskets and while im at it the timing chain.

Bigger camms just move the power band up higher usually and if its a mild cam the gains will be so small its not worth the money. I dont belive anyone makes a cam for the SOHc but i could be wrong. Bigger cams can also reduce fuel economy/drivability/emmissions. Do your self a favor and save up for a nice blower kit. It will give you the best of both worlds...good torque/good power gains/good drivability and emmissions as well as the gas milage hit woulnt be as bad.

i pretty much have the same truck as u .. just i have a 96 ... im planning on lifting it some time .. but i still want it to b very streetable .. wht do you guys think a good sized lift would b?

Don't bother with the 410 cam. If you're going to open up the motor, might as well do it right, buy the 422 cam.

Don't forget the longer pushrods, and Rocker arms. All avaialable from Delta.

Ryan

thanks i wasplanning to do those as well and then maybe new valves or is that over doing it? and as fore the lift 4 in body and look for a diffrent front axle set up. tires should be 37s if your in the mud

4" body lifts are illegal, therefor not going to be found.

Do a 2" Body lift, and 2-3" suspension lift....

Ryan

are they only illegal on exploders bc of thier high rollovers bc my dads got one on his 4runner

From my understanding, Raising the body away from the frame more than 3" is illegal. On ANY vehicle. And as far as rollovers go, the Geo Tracker/Suzuki Sidekick and Chevy Blazer are WAY more dangerous. They were just never as popular as the Ford Explorer....if you sell 100,000 Trackers, and 100 rollover, that's pretty good. And it doesn't make headlines. But if you are the #1 Selling SUV, you make 1,000,000 of them and 2,000 of them rollover, the Geo is STILL 2 times more prone to rollover, but 100 of them rolling over across 10 years is nothing. But 2,000 Explorers Rolling over across the same time frame, and it's a HUGE liability, and nobody will rent you a trailer for them.

now about those superchargers how do i go about to finding one. ive been to paxtons website and cant seem to find anything about to join the marine sso i wont be spending much an have about 1000 saved up

www.explorerexpress.com

They have a supercharger kit for all the explorer motors. Hope you got 4 grand and change though... They are where I bought my programmer for my X, came with 3 custom tunes from BamaChips. I think one come with the SC kits, maybe as an option.

The Marines you say? I just got out about 6 months ago. Whats your MOS going to be? Go infantry then recon like me if you want to be one of the most badass guys around. Plus there's nothing like kicking in doors and blowing sh*t up for a living. On the other hand, I don't really have any useful civilian job skills now. Not that I would have done it any different. If you want to know what its really like, watch Generation Kill. I know most of the guys portrayed in that. And "Fruity" Rudy played himself. Thats the real Marine Corps

Haha, yeah. I should go work with Dog The Bounty Hunter. Or take out an ad in Soldier Of Fortune.
