intake, exhaust, chip...not a fortune and the best place to start.

good luck
CP :D

Depends on what kind of performance you want to build for (high end power, low end torque, off road traction, etc.). My personal choice for places to start would be off road traction -- tires, lockers, lower gears, winch (for when I get stuck), and stuff like that.
It also depends on your definition of "spending a fortune"

hi again

well performance wise i am looking for hp. but street legal, where i live the are alot of rice rockets but i want to have the best of both worlds on and off road

Start by letting it breath better. Your iN california, so go with a K&n Fipk it'll give you a little throttle response and a nice underhood growl. After that look at the Mass air, the throttle body, and of course cat-back exhaust, once you get the puppy breathin good get a dual program apten chip.

*my disclaimer* check your local laws before listening to me

And don't forget a good tune-up with quality products, to clean your current maf and adjust the tps

hey there

i just changed the oil and threw in a k and n oil filter, but the air package i cannot find?? any help with that ??

Hmm I just looked around a bit and didn't find one for a first gen either, sorry mine is a 99 and I didn't look at your truck stats at first. The KKm intake is very popular around here. But is not carb approved. The only other two makers I have found are k&n and MAC neither seem to have your x listed. I am sure someone mor knowledgeable will stop by and help. But in the meantime you could "swiss cheese" the air box below the filter (doubtfully carb approved either;) )and do a couple freebies like the maf cleaning, TPS adjustment, and the throttle cable mod. type em into the search.

I have a 94 XLT myself...there doesn't seem to be a complete "kit" for intake..that I have found anyway..K&N seems to just have a replacement filter that still uses the stock airbox..to me thats not worth it.

I just bought the KKM setup..it uses the stock pipes, but eliminates our whole air box and the first portion of the tube that goes by the headlight...

I would save that part and the box so if you had to you can put it back in for inspection..

mac doesnt seem to hve anything either...its like us people with the first gen's don't want mods or something..:(

yea i know i look at the kkm one and i was like i have never heard of this and i dont know i kinda gotta keep it street legal for now but thanks for your help, i am thinking about throw a borla exhaust system on there???

it will be street legal...i mean you wont get pulled over or anything.....the KKM is not illegal, its just that it is not certified to pass emissions...

Which doesn't mean it won't, b/c from what i understand most dont have a problem...just not certified to do so

its under the hood anyway, so noone would know either way..except you that is..

yea i knew that.........but i dunno i was thinking that i might just throw a fram air filter in there and then focus on that borla system........

From my limited knowledge, I don't think doing anything short of removing the whole airbox in our first gens will do anything to improve the intake.

Putting a different filter in there will just give you a better filter im thinking....the whole box and where it gets the air from is the problem.

what borla are you going for?..those are expensive

Im ordering a flowmaster 40 series delta flow muffler soon, and will be getting the pipes done at a local shop..probably the cheapest way to go, and I'm not sure i like the bolt on exhausts with gaskets/hangers...id rather have something welded to make sure there are no leaks...

which borla though?

also do you know what the pipe size is?..i thought 2.25 but after checking out flowmaster site they have 2"

Intake and exhaust are your best bets. But logic tells us that one really isn't all that good without the other...if you let it breathe in more by improving your intake, it won't help you if you can't get all that air out quickly. And the inverse is also true, why let it exhale if it has trouble breathing in?

But if it were me, I'd take the heads off, have them ported, polished or extrude-honed, and while you're at it, increase the valve sizes. Now that'll wake the thing up.

My older brother used to have a 94 XLT, and sold it a couple years ago to buy his 01 Mountaineer, and I was just talking with him this weekend, and he wishes he never got rid of it. He loved that truck, it went everywhere he wanted it to go, and never complained. He since sold his Mountaineer to my dad, who in turn sold me his 97 Eddie Bauer...keep it in the family!

Here's my other suggestions for you though: Throw some bigger, more aggressive tires on it, a little lift if you can swing it, maybe some new rims, a set of big round off-road lights on the bumper and a roof rack, and go hit some trails.

Best of luck to you.

kdog, here's what you should do about the intake..
Buy a KKM, and then get a K&N Emissions sticker and put it on the intake; the inspectors won't know it's not a K&N and will pass you.
