since i have no way of stickin my big arm behind the manifolds i was wondering if anyone has tryed to get to the plugs from the plate on the tranny hump where the shifter goes. i had my skinny friend try to get to it from on top of motor but his arms were too short i thought about taking the upper manifold off but it's 50 bucks for gasket set and i'd rather spend that money on something else. i tryed asking at ford dealer but they really wouldn't say if there was an easy way. i've been putting this off for a while but with a supercharger and now 75k miles there are just burned out i'm running at full rich and getting like 5 miles a gallon.

I have a 1991 model and replaced mine this past weekend. I found the plug was attached to a small piece of metal with a plastic screw type holder. Pop-ed the plastic screw out with a screw driver and hammer. I was then able to pull the sensor and wires up where I could connect them. Hopes this helps.

I changed my O2 sensors last week. The passenger side I had to disconnect the plug from the top side, I was able to pull it loose from the metal bracket holding it there. I pulled the unit up disconnected it and reconnected the plug and then went to the bottom to screw the sensor into the exaust pipe (I kinda twisted the wires on the sensor end 4 turns backwards so it would not kink as I screwed the sensor into the pipe). The drivers side I had to unplug from the bottom side, plugged the new one in and screwed the sensor into the pipe.
My Explorer is a 93 and it took me about 45 minutes to do.
I think you can do it, you just need to ba a contortionist or have very small arms.
I don't think there are any special tricks involved, just be patient and expect a few scrapes and bruises.
