im thinking of getting a 1998 xlt and it has 177,000 miles on it, its been taking care of by a mechanic and i was just wondering just how long can these things last, and if it comes down to it should i just get an engine rebuilding kit or just get a whole new engine?

Which engine do you have? v8 or v6, if v6 --> SOHC or OHV? The OHV tends to last longer than the SOHC. We have members here with well over 200k and some that have passed the 300k or 400k mile mark with the OHV. All of the engines will last quite long if you take care of them properly though.

Welcome to Explorer Forum! I have 190k on my OHV, my friend has over 200k on his SOHC. Both running strong.

solid

thanks that makes me feel better its the v6 sohc i belive

I've got a '93 XLT with 192,000 miles on (I believe) the original engine/tranny. Aside from a slight cold-engine tick in winter, it runs like a top.

V-8 Awd

Well, I've got 201k on my 97 V8 AWD.. And its running strong. The only thing I have to do tomorrow is replace my front driveshaft. other than that, no serious problems ever...
