I have a 1997 Mountaineer. Need to replace the EGR valve. I'm sure it's not impossible to replace, but... wow. I stared at it for an hour and a half and it didn't budge. Then I called my brother to come stare at it with me and it still was not intimidated.

Any tips?

Anyone? Tight clearance in there especially where the egr tube connects to the valve.

Not sure if you are talking about the part that goes into the intake manifold, but on my 4.0L SOHC I had to push and pull as hard as I could on the intake manifold for about 10 minutes to get it to come off. I wasn't sure at first if I was doing it right, but it's the only way to get the upper intake manifold out of the 4.0L. Getting it back on with a new o-ring is also a PITA. It just takes a lot of brute force. I leveraged myself against the sides of the truck. I was shaking I was pulling it so hard.

Not sure about the 5.0L.
