Any way to bypass the cats - temporarily

Hi all. I got such great help on my last question, I have another about exhaust.

Do they make a pipe that I can bolt to the headers to my cat-back system to eliminate the catalytic converter. I wish to do this for some fun off road and at the track but put it back to stock for every day driving.

Also, does bypassing the cats cause more harm than good in performance on an Explorer?

They used to sell the 'Cheater Pipes many years ago. They called them Cat Test pipes.

Have a muffler shop make you up a piece of pipe with the correct flanges.

Bypassing your cats will decrease torque for high RPM hp gain. It will also trip the CEL, your mileage will plummet, and you're carbon up lots of sensors and motor components.

you could have an exhaust shop weld you up some dumps. look at www.jegs.com or www.summitracing.com it will basically be an inline bypass that has a plate with wingnuts. anytime you want your truck to be obnoxiously loud take the plates off. you will gain about 5hp on the top end and loose about 20lb/ft on the bottom. not worth it IMHO.

I saw a product on "trucks" where it had a pipe with a remote controled 'door' (can't remember proper name) that closes/opens at a push of a button therefore bypassing your cats all together

Theyre called cutouts, and yes they have some electronically activated ones. As mentioned before, they arent worth it for us...High HP cars use them that wanna be street legal, but have the power when they need it
