There are two cubbies, one is the netted style on the right hand side like all the older styles had, which you don't have if you have the subwoofer audio system. The 3rd seat and rear air are packaged options, you have to get one if you get the other. I don't think any 3rd seat/rear a/c explorer has the cubbie hole. There is also alot more underfloor storage without the 3rd seat option.

I put my aftermarket cd changer in there, why? because I like my glovebox and armest for other gadgets and stuff. It seems out of the way, but I don't normally change the 6 discs out too often. I had to cut away some plastic in the bin to make it fit.

I keep jumper cables in it. (For those less-fortunate Blazer/Jimmy owners.) :D

I think thats a good place to keep a disk changer. Would keep the noise of it changing disks down ALOT, and no one would have a clue were it is such as a break in or what not.

I mounted a fire extinguisher in my cubbie hole! Perfect fit...

I know the 2nd Gen explorers you could get an MTX custom sub enclosure for the netted area cubby, and I've searched everywhere for one for my 3rd gen 02 but no such luck. If anyone's found a way to moddify that cubby to get some subwoofer use out of it i'd like to see pics and hear details. Right now mine just holds extra reciever balls and a maglight, plus any other crap that might accumulate in there.

I know its unique but it works

I took the same hole and mounted my inverter in there under a custom plexiglass cover. I also modded my hole above that (The one with the net). I made another plexiglass cover for that one and mounted my CD changer In there. It took a little modification and once it was complete all my family members who have explorers wanted one. It looks real nice with the neons.

Wow...that sound really cool! Do you have some pics of your handy work?

I have an 02 XLT, I took the storage bin out and installed my amp inside. The amp is a JL Audio 250/1 so it was small enough to fit. The amp doesnt get hot and its tucked away where nobody can see it. Thats just one possibility.
