Already got one, and already have the itch to go higher, lol. No, I probably wont get a body lift, but I am interested to know if it would work or not.

Ahh i see, yeah I lost that itch to go higher, and got the itch for bigger tires.. lol

After installing the Hurst Shifter in my X (which I STILL LOVE, everytime I shift!) I can tell you WITHOUT A DOUBT, that the only 'issue' with installing this shifter with a body lift, is it will put the shifter 2"-3" LOWER....everything will still bolt up nicely, no issues anywhere on the shifting, or mechanics of the shifter. Only position is changed.

Ok, its been awhile, I kept putting it off, but I finally have my Hurst installed. I gotta say, I am amazed at the difference it makes. The only issue is the buzzing, its a tad annoying, I will double check all the screws and bolts. If it persists I wonder if dissassembly and greasing everything would kill the noise?
Other than that tho, its freakin great!

Ok, I have been going over this shifter and I cannot get it to stop making noise! I have spent a lot of time and money soundsuppressing my X, and now thats all you hear, the dang shifter buzzing and rattling.
I checked all the bolts and nuts, even took it back out and reinstalled, no difference. When its idling, in gear or not it makes a whisper sandpaper noise, I can deal with that, but when I am accelerating, it rattles like crazy. I got inventive today and made a boot of dense foam that goes over the entire rachet assembly to try to tone it down, nothing.
I guess I will call Hurst next, see if they can help me out. How did you all get yours to quit rattling?

Mine does the same thing and I haven't found a solution. The next thing I was going to try is to back out the stop screws so it'll let the shifter travel farther into the shifter assembly. I have the screws set as far in as possible now.

I was considering the same thing, I locktite-ed the stop screws and lock nuts, so I did not want to try to break em loose without a good reason. I think this might be the reason now, it only rattles in the top gears, 1,3, 5, so the stick might be rattling against the screw.
I sure wish they had put more than a rubber seal in the middle, a lot of trans noise comes right up into the cab through it.

<----stops working on the house long enough to check a few threads, and respond to even fewer....

I had a 'noise' that I COULD HAVE SWORN was coming from my shifter.....as I tried EVERYTHING ELSE, from replacing the U-joints to replacing the Speedo cable....NOTHING HELPED....

UNTIL I replaced the Speedo Gear when I re-gear'd the rear-end and went to a different size tire..

So before you go blaming the shifter, try taking the speedo GEAR out of the transmission....unplugging the cable won't do it...as the gears will still turn.

Just try it......

another question do you have to do anything to to a center console to make the shift fit

spdrcr, I dont think it has anything to do with it, everything was silent until I put this shifter in. I will look into tho, couldnt hurt.
dkchrist, it does not interfere with the console with the first gens, second I dont know, but it will work with the dual cupholder in the rangers, I dont know what second gen x's have. I ditched the chrome floor trim ring and used my stock black plastic one, looks better I think.

I have seen this shifter used with the 1st Gen (which was also used as the BASIC console in the 2nd gens), I have seen it installed into a Ranger, and they retained the dual cupholder trim....I have even seen it installed into a Ranger with the 2nd Gen Explorer Console installed...

So it's all possible.

Thanks for the tip but I know it's the shifter on mine. I can wiggle the shifter back and forth and hear it bang against the shifter mount. It didn't start until I installed the shifter too.

I have one installed in my X also. I too have the noise. I think it is the normal sound from the tranny, the billet shifter just transfers the noise better because of the way the shifter is built. I am hoping mine will quiet down some after I have the tranny rebuilt. I made the boot that came with the shifter fit the stock plastic trim ring on the floor. It looks like a factory option now. I may try backing out on the over-travel stops to see if that quiets the noise.

this might be a stupid question but have you guys checked your fluid in your trans? Low fluid will make noise too

Also does anyone have the part # for this shifter. I didn't know they made a short throw. I have to get one now.

Yeah, my trans is brand new (rebuilt), just got it fixed the other day. I called Hurst tech support a couple days ago, they say that the noise is normal, that you have to deal with it. Its the downside of taking out all the rubber bushings and cushion type parts, which in this case is only the ball of rubber the shifter stub is suspended in. Leave em in, quite but sloppy, take em out, noisy but crisp shifts.
To look on summit racings site, type in hurst ranger, it should come up. I dont have the part # tho. They are the cheapest I found to buy it from.

Is the shifting improvement really worth $200?

I believe it is, I like the way it looks and the way it shifts. I prefer a crisp short throw shifter to the sloppy stock one. By shortening the shift throw, you don't loose as much RPM when shifting, which keeps your speed up. Plus it allows you to reach speeds faster with out the shift lag.

Also depending on what kind of driver you are it can actually save a little gas since you don't have to run the RPMs up as high since you don't loose as much when shifting.

But the trans isn't a fast shifting trans anyway.....
How much shorter is the throw? a big difference?
