To anyone who has the Hurst short throw shifter, you know that in 3rd and 4th there is no detent pressure on the shifter causing it to transmit noise and vibration through the handle. I greatly reduced the noise by changing the trans fluid to synthetic, adding Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer and I replaced the light plastic knob with a much heavier aluminum T-handle.

You can also reduce the noise by putting a thin rubber gasket between the shifter and the shifter extension. Common fix for the Steeda Tri-Ax shifters.

Ah I never thought of that. I wish I had read this before I switched my Hurst from one car to another a couple of hours ago.

You can move the stop bolts in enough so that in 3rd and 4th it puts pressure on the sifter and helps cut down on the noise and doesn't vibrate.

Be careful doing that!! Stop bolt pressure on the shifter means that you *might* not be putting the transmission fully in gear....

That thought did occur to me. Are there any signs that the gears may not fully be engaged other than premature failure?

Popping out of gear or difficulty grabbing a gear when shifting quickly.

Ah, I follow you. I've only taken it around the block so far but no problems yet. I guess I'll find out more tomorrow. I don't think there will be a problem with it popping out of gear or problems when shifting quickly. I did some quick shifting tonight with it.

I put a peice of rubber between the shifter and the handle, then I moved the stops up about 1/4 turn (just enough to put a SLIGHT load against the shifter in 3rd and 4th) Worked great! Quiet as can be.

Moving the stops on mine finally stopped the vibrating. I haven't put rubber in between yet to stop the trans. noise coming through it.
