I have had a "Low Oil Level" alert message for months now on my 1999 Eddie Bauer. I have had the oil changed twice since the alert presented itself, so I am certain the oil level is okay. Got to be the oil level sender, right? That was my conclusion and set off to find out where the blasted thing was located and then order a replacement part. Identifying the location was a little difficult since everybody thought that I was talking about the oil pressure sensor. But,finally, I prevailed. It's on the drivers side (isn't it?).
Next, I wanted to order the part. Does anyone know how many oil pressure sensors there are in the market place?!
Finally, I was able to find some oil level senders (Ebay, Amazon. Rock Auto, PartsGeek to name a few.) Guess what? None of the senders that I found were compatible with my vehicle! Question: Does anyone know where I can get the correct part or have a part number?

What engine do you have? Any chance you could provide a part number of that which you have purchased and hasn't worked? A photo the old one? The specific part name for that which controls the "low oil pressure" lamp is "Oil pressure switch". Senders are for gauges.

It looks like all the switches for the 99 are single terminal. I can't find conclusive info on whether they are normally open or normally closed. So I can't tell you exactly what to expect under what condition but performing the following test could give some helpful info.

This test is for single terminal switches, not senders/thermistors etc.
*If there is more than 1 terminal on the switch you see, don't perform this test.

1.Disconnect the wire to the switch.
2.Start engine normally.Note, if the lamp still illuminated. Turn off vehicle.
3.Attach the wire to a soild ground point.
2.Start engine normally.Note, if the lamp still illuminated. Turn off vehicle.

If the lamp was illuminated both times, I think the issue might not be the switch.
If the lamp did go out in 1 of the startups, then I think that confirms a switch issue.

You just pinpointed the problem I have: It's not the "oil pressure" lamp but the "low oil level" readout on the lower console. I did not purchase the oil level sending unit because I cannot find the part for my particular vehicle. I did find other low oil sending units on the web, but none that are compatible. Of course the wire harness could be open but, in all the years of my troubleshooting experience, I have found few open wires. So, I'm betting on the sender.

Does this look like the part you are trying to replace?

Obsolite or PN invalid. Next step "your local junk yard".

That oil pan sensor is hard to find sometimes, I've read they were obsolete ages ago. There should be some kind of replacement, it is not a complicate part. Those tend to leak, but almost never fail. First see what yours looks like, is it covered in oil, and is the connector on it and looking good?

I'll check it out. I need to put some brake pads on anyway. While it's on jacks, I'll have a chance to take a good look at the sensor (sender).
