The alternator on my 96 is making a noise and sometimes the volt gauge reads nothing. I think the bearings are going in it. I just called to get a price on rebuilding it and they said anywhere from $55-$108.
I was wondering how hard it is to rebuild it myself? anyone done it? Is there a rebuild kit you can buy?
I didn't know you could rebuild them anymore. i was never able to find a kit for like my SHO. It is easy to do all you need is the kit and sodder iron. If you find a place that sells the rebuild kit please post it here.
Here is a link to a website that has what is needed to rebuild some explorer altenators. I noticed on my 1998 4.0 sohc explorers (yes plural) that the rotor has a slip ring that wears out. It is were the regulator rides on the spinning shaft(rotor). This place sells you the rotor, regulator, and bearings to rebuild yours. I just ordered a kit and will rebuild the one that just failed on me as soon as it arrives. I did have a spare I got from a junkyard to hold me over but it was my last one so time to get more. I will be hitting 210,000 on my 4door daily driver soon. 40 miles to work and another 40 back home each day.Check out the link below!
