Anyone have a snowplow

sberkel said:
Yeah - but thats the crap I always hear when I wheel my Explorer! :p

I am talking overloading, such as a big plow on a soft front end, a 7k lbs trailer behind a small SUV.....

not saying I never did anything like that, just saying I have learned and know better now.

might be stupid question....doesn't blowing end up making a pile eventaully i mean you have to blow it somewhere....

If you have a good higher hp 2 stage blower they can usually broadcast it far enough that it just makes the surrounding snow deeper, and more dense.

Any decent blower will throw that stuff over 40 feet in the direction of your choice... If it is really wet and heavy, it might take a bit more effort, but that stuff doesn't push either (unless you call pushing ramming a pile of solid snow at about 40 MPH - hence the call to get an old beater 3/4 ton 4x4).

You just blow it onto the lawn (or onto the neighbor's place ;) ) depending on your particular frame of mind at the time...

This is what we had...

It was quite a machine... Easily outworked most local snow plow rigs and we lived in an area where it needed to...

How much was the blower setup?

The John Deeres are the Mercedes of lawn equipment... just so that you are not shocked...

Our rig, complete was around $14,000.

You can get a good unit for less than $1500 that will take care of any driveway - plus cut the lawn in the summer...

We had the best becsue of the amount of ground we had to cover.

The JD's are full hydro (steering - lift - transmission - brakes - blower tilt and swivel, etc.) with shaft drives for all the accessories - and ours had the cab, heater, radio, blower, mower, and a few other things (wheel weights - tire chains - block heater, etc.).

You can get a high end walk behind self propelled with electric start for $900. Or you can go down from there to just a couple hundred. I have used both and it depends on the size of what you are doing.

Here's a thread with a Ranger and a nice Curtis plow (7" foot I think)
ranger with plow Suspension and drivetrain is similar to the Explorer, but the heavier explorer would push a bit better without ballast.
As for plowing with the Ex- depends on what you are going to do:
If your looking to do commercial work it wouldnt be a truck to use, but if you have your own property or a couple of small lots or driveways I wouldn't worry to much about using the Ex. with a decent blade.
Just take it easy and keep the truck maintained.
I plowed for a guy who ran a few rangers to do bank lots and drive thru's. I don't remember any problems and they were beat by the employees of the co.
Take a look on E-bay for used plows, seems to be more than a few this time of year.

When you get the plow post some pictures.
