I put a set on the door panels just above the side mirror remote and another set in the back near the headliner on the trim around the liftgate.

I thought about the A pillar, but I have light grey on there and didnt want a big black friggin circle up there sticking out like a sore thumb. It would look nice of it blended in up there.

Paint the tweeters to match.

thought of that too, but how do you avoid getting paint all over the tweeter when you paint the grille that goes over it. it doesnt come off on the ones I have

Paint the A pillar black.

tape the grill off and spray the mounts to match then when that's dry us a brush with small amounts of paint (so it doesn't drip) to paint the grill/cover.

Put the tweets in the defrost air vents in the dash

Awdrocks what component set is that? I like your front mounting location, that's what I was thinking. Is there enough room behind that sail panel?

they are infinity kappas... plenty of space... the mounting bracket still goes in about 1'' to 1 1/2'' or so.

Very nice job. Looks great. I'll have to agree, I think that's were they belong. What size speakers did you put in the door? BTW, good lord there's a lot of gauges. You need clearance for take off when you drive that thing?

Thanks... yeah I think they look really clean there and look factory.... plus I get outstanding sound there... its a nice angle

6.5 components front and rear... fit like a charm....

Did you have to make an adapter ring for them to fit?

Well the shop we did it at had some Explorer door speaker adapters that were made for just this.

I see. Just wondering, I was goin to install 6.5 today, I guess I was just gonna cut a ring out of MDF, although I wouldn't say I'm an expert at that sort of thing. Perhaps I'll just go grab a ring from some car audio place around here and save the trouble. BTW, I checked out your link, that is one tight X. I took one look and all I can say is, YES PLEASE!!! :D

Well thank you... its been quite a project.

My first stereo system I had some Polk 6.5 components also. At this early time there were no Explorer fitment rings available... so we actually custom made some rings with MDF... fit great... but guess what? when I changed out my system... all the MDF was cracked and none of the speakers had a tight seal. Once we installed the right rings it was amazing how much more solid and better it fit and sounded... and they are still as tight as can be. In short... get the made rings.

Incase your deciding on conponets for the second row..... I vote its a no brainer if you can. Buy the components in the second row. My first sytem has componets in the front only and co's in the second row.... well it was NIGHT AND DAY on the sound quality when sitting in the front seat or the second row.... thats why I decided to go components in the second row also.

Now when I sit in the second row.... I cant tell the difference from the front. Outstanding second row quality.

My next step is intalling another set in the third row..... third row passangers get really shooty sound with that W7 on their neck.... a component in the third row will god sent.

Man, kudos, you really look out for your passengers in that X. I def would like to have components in the back, and prob will in the future, but I can just hear that cash register chinging away, so for now the passengers get screwed. By the way, I called the local car audio guys, they all say that they don't know of any rings for a 5x7 to 6.5. All the ones I spoke to just make their own either out of gluon, mdf, or one said abs plastic.
