Anyone seen a tensioner like this??

Hi guys
I'm not looking for help other than that which might satisfy my curiosity.

Today got nuts deep into my spare motor stripping it down to see what i'm gonna need to order to sort out the chains etc. When i took out the old rear tensioner i found one the like of which i've not seen on any parts sites or in any pics here. The one in question is on the right and next to it is the standard one i've seen before in black.

Other than not being black the end of the plunger has a step on it and instead on one large oil portway it has 4 smaller ones.

So is this just an early incarnation or has it been robbed of another model???

The part number on it is the same except it ends AD not AA (i think it was D)

So????

Odd tensioner

The earlier rear tensioner part number was XU3Z6K254BA. It was superceded by 7U3Z6K254A. I'm not familiar with a rear tensioner with a part number ending in AA.

I've never seen any tensioner that looks like the one in your photo. Does the smaller diameter section of the piston move relative to the piston?

What is the year of your spare engine as decoded from the identification number stamped on the left rear of the block? I believe some SOHC V6 engines were built and exported in 1996.

yes the smaller diameter bit moves with the piston.
The engine came out of a uk spec 97 registered. I'll get the code tommorrow and look up the build info.

Below is a photo showing the box the one i bought for my other engine came in and you can see the part number ends AA. this is also stamped on the end of the black one

But as you said when it came to ordering from tasca the code only has one A at the end, go figure. Incidentally when we order fron ford in the uk we have to use a finis number that is different from the part number. They like to make it soooo easy sometimes having to cross reference only four or five times!!!!

That looks like the old rear tensioner I removed from my '97, silver colored with the 4 holes and the thick copper washer. I'm not sure about the step on the end - I still have the thing somewhere, I'll have to check it out.

I thought it must be old OE as in the uk the chances of getting supplied with the wrong one is slim as we generally don't have any similar motors. I was interested to see that the rear had been updated as i had only read about the front one being updated.
