Im on my 6th Gen 2 Explorer. I have owned at least 1 since 96 and and at some times up to 3 at once. I LOVE them and keep thinking sadly when the one i have dies, it will most likely be my last Gen 2.... At this moment the truck has 202K miles and running good.... i keep thinking though of doing a frame off on it and keeping it another 15 + years!

Strip and coat frame, all new beaings, breaks, rebuild frontend, 4" lift, 33's, etc... and thinking of going EcoBoost or Coyote under the hood. I was originally thinking Coyote but a friend said, why not Ecoboost. Just wondering if anything has seen or done this yet?

I seriously doubt a Coyote will physically go in there, as cool as that would be.

By EcoBoost, I assume you are referring to the 3.5L? You'd pretty much have to gut the entire driveline out of an F150: engine, trans, PCM, wiring, etc. Probably doable, but definitely a lot of work. Do you know someone with an IDS (you will need it). The hardest part there will be all the other modules on the CAN bus which will all throw errors if missing.

Stroke a 302 & be done with it.....

Could a coyote fit in a 2nd gen? With a complete and total redesign of the front end. The biggest problem you would face is the width of a coyote. I know they can fit in gen 4's but I'm not sure about a gen 2

I saw a 3.5 ecoboost on the local CL for sale pretty cheap. Was out of a f150 with low miles. You can order the full wiring harness for a crate motor online. ;)

I know a Coyote 5.0 or two have been stuffed into the noses of Rangers, but essentially even the frame has to be brutalized to make enough room for the thing.

Even the 4.6 is destructively tight, but like the Coyote, a few have landed in a Ranger (which shares its engine bay with a gen 2 Expo.

Not sure the 3.5 EcoBoost would be much of an improvement, the Ranger/Expo frame is simply too narrow in the wrong places. Think the upper control arms, frame, turbos and exhaust would all want to be in the same place at the same time!

Now a 2.3 EB? Hmmmmm

Already on it :D

got a 3.5 ecoboost from a 2012 f-150 for my 92 Blue Bandit project

I'm in the same boat.

I'm leaning towards replacing the stock 5.0 with a reman. stock 5.0

Over the years I have "upgraded many vehicles to get more power. It usually results in broken u-joints, axles, and other problems because the vehicle was just not designed for it.

And "stock" condition always manages to get the best re-sale value (God forbid) as well.

Curious to where this goes. Maybe a JP upgrade down the road.:burnout:
that's a great idea!! I am still in the planning stages of everything as of right now, but starting to gather al the parts and draw up my wiring conversion diagrams. will have to use the f-150 pcm, abs module, rcm, bcm, and instrument cluster in order for everything to work right, but I really don't see a reason why it should work and run just like in an f-150
