It won't affect your tranny at all, it isn't computer controlled. It will only affect engine performance.

IMHO, you'd probably see "some" performance gains with an Apten chip, but not nearly as if you had a computer controlled automatic. You only have to use premium if you ask them to burn a 91 program for you. They do have 87 programs as well. My gut feel is that you'd hardly notice much performance gains running an 87 program without the refined shift points.
