The backlight color was blue vs. green in the early Gen II's, but the clusters are the same aside from the 2x4 vs. 4x4 ones. There are no indicators placed in the overlay for the lights to shine through.

1996-1997 and 1998+ are different. Check engine light and a few others were in a different location.

I think the door ajar or fuel cap light too.

I'd stick with a 98+ if you want plug and play.

sweet thanks for the info i have AWD (for now) so the 4x2 4x4 light dosent go on ok cool the one im lookin at is a 99 so i should be good i love the way those guages look...merry christmas to me..

95-97 are different, also light up blue 98+ are green. In '01 when the sport body changed and ST was added they went to the white face. Vs a 2001 4-door would still be black. However other then 4x4 light they are the same. I have a '01 sport 4x2 cluster in mine. 4x4 is manual now, so I don't need a light anyway.

Only '01+ clusters are white, a 99 cluster is still black gauges.

ahhhhh ok so all the 2001 sports are white so id be ok just pluggin the sport into my xlt no modification to the harness thanks

correct, But don't forget to switch the odometer;)

well this one is perfect it has 105k on it i have 107k so not much rolling has to be done i was reading the how to and cant wait thanks stic-o appreciate it

Keep your old one for spare parts too. Right after Installed the new one the temp gauge didn't work, so I swapped the old one from mine.;)

Jeez- I forgot about the idiot light location changes- and I have to see that my fuel cap is loose every time I open my door... :D

Y'all are right, it was the check engine, check suspension, fuel cap, and door ajar lights that changed locations...

Ha thats great! yeah i saw that theres a check suspension light where in the suspension is there sensor

good idea stic-o i always save old parts they kind of pile up but theres always a use for them

Here is my swap. Had to rework the wiring for a few of the idiot lights. 2004 ranger cluster with the silverish background.

I like the silvery gauges... I had white and pulled them out.

Anywho- since I had these in the garage, here are some pics of the differences in the gauge idiot lights.

You can see the part numbers, but the '95-'97 gauges are on the right, '98+ on the left:

Here are the other ones, '95-'97 on the right, '98+ WITHOUT air-ride on left.

slammed that cluster looks real good i like the silver too..

joe thanks for doing that now i see the difference not much on the right side but the left is a different story

Can someone tell me which white/sliver faced clusters I can use in my 99 Sport SOHC V6 4x4? I want a simple drop in, no rewiring..

well what slammed just posted he changed his guage to a silver from a 2004 ranger and it fit but he had to rewire for a couple of the idiot lights so i guess they changed the wiring for it it shouldnt be that hard to do just figuring out the connections ask slammed how it was done..if you want it can be done...

ok so im gunna purchase the 2001 cluster, im gunna get white right i know ive read all the posts and i appreciate all the feedback but just wannt make sure before i buy something i already have thanks again for the help...

I also like how the gear shifthing is not an anolog looking pin type on the silver cluster it actually looks like it lights up slammed do you have pics of the cluster lit up maybe at night now you got me thinking it over...damn

I think he may be missing the shift indicator- I thought they were all pin indicators... Hmmm... Good question!

when I did mine i left the silver out. and kept the factory black surround for the newer white gauges. Also keft my black shift pattern and OD.
