Okay I have a 2002 explorer sport trac. I'm needing to swap out the rear axle. Does anyone know if I can swap with one out of a 2002 explorer sport? Any major issues that I should be aware of? I have done some research and it looks like the only difference is disc vs drum which is not that big of an issue. I really wanted to do the disc conversion anyway. Any information would be helpful.

No significant difference. Even with the bronco axle, since a broncos is a true 8.8 (longer) and explorers with the shortened. Still match up to the axle plug

AFAIK, there are really 3 versions of the 8.8 in the explorers.

Drum (first Gen X's), Disc brake and then the IRS (independent suspension ones). Other than that, I don't think there are differences to worry about...

someone might confirm this as its only hear say i get from my "heep" buddies is that the issue with the sploder/sport/sport trac rear is that its off set to the right (the pumpkin or differential or what ever you want to call it is not centered left to right and actually sits an inch or two to the right. whereas the broncos and tangs have a conventional centered diff.

Thank you all for the information. Being a Jeep guy I know alot about the Dana axles and very little about the ford axles.

Seeing is believing. Off topic, notice how the ST's left rear sway bar end link is at least 1" lower than the right?

I have a 8.8 rearend assembly from a '01 Explorer , Just swapped my ring and pinion since mine had 4.10's and the Ex's had 3.73's, everything else is exactly the same.
