are these transmissions interchangeable

i have a 96 xlt 4 dr 6cyl 4.0 and the transmission is going, i have an option to buy a 96 sport 4.0 with a good trans. will this fit into my truck?

I believe that it should, however there are 2 different motors, so there are 2 differrent transmissions.

i have 4.0 efi does that sound right ? i see everyone say sohc or ohv how can i find out?

the eighth digit in the vin should be x or e of it is x it is ohv if it is e its ohc and according to my book they did not start the ohc til 97 but mine only covers exp/mountaneer/ranger 91-99 but not sport? and are they 4wd or 2wd im going to jump out and say they both use 4r55e

after a little more research i believe the sport uses the 5r55e any body else got an idea?

If it is a 4 speed, then it is the 4R55E. If you have 5 speeds, then it is the 5R55E.
