A question for anybody who lives in a part of Arizona that requires emission/smog testing. (primarily PHX)

What does the test involve?
My main question is: Do they check under your hood?? (to see what type of engine you have?)

The reason I ask is because I am moving to PHX and have a 92 5.0 in my 91 Explorer. ( I have followed California's strict emission guidlines for my conversion.....ie; retained all emission equipment) But, was still wondering how detailed a check they perform in AZ?. Currently my 5.0 passes in the same emission standards category as the original 4.0L V6.

Thanks in Advance!

I think 99% of the time if it passes in CA, it'll pass in any other state.

I havent actually gone thorugh Caly emissions, I just used their guidlines for my engine conversion.

I can't remember absolutely for sure; but I am pretty sure that I just had to start it, and they ran some gas-cap check, then they rammed a rod in my tail-pipe
So maybe if you have duals; this might give them a visual cue to look further. But you should be OK. The Standards aren't nearly like CA's (my home state)

They will look under your hood, check under your car with a floor jack looking mirror and stick a tube up your tail pipe. I don't know if they would care about an engine conversion or not. I do know they look for all of the original smog equipment that is applicable to your model year. The under car check is to make sure you have your catalytic converter. The tail pipe test will be done at idle and while maintaining a constant speed. They will run the driving test and let you either sit in the passenger seat or wait in their little glass Fotomart booth. They used to let you do the driving test back when I had it done in '92. I lived in Ohio from '92-'98. After I moved back I had to run my Wife's Sable through emissions and that was when I found that they won't let you drive yor vehicle on the wheels anymore. Since my Explorer has 4x4 Auto it doesn't get the driving test, but I have to run it through the emissions check every year though instead of every two years like my Wife's car.

Wow, sounds like their serious down there! Well, my 5.0 motor has more emission equipment installed on it then my 4.0 Explorer had on it

My 91 Explorer w/ Caly emissions equipment only had:
-2 catalytic converters
-1 PCV valve
It did NOT have an EGR!!!!! (factory)

My 92 5.0 H.O in my 91 Explorer has:
-an EGR valve
-Catalytic converters
-SMOG pump....that gives a constant feed of O2 in the Heads
-PCV valve

My 5.0 easily passes 4.0 emission standards!

Thanks for all the info!!!!! anybody know about swap laws down there?

Al
