Glacier991 mentioned using a Teflon lubricant while re-assembling his A4LD VB.

Exactly what teflon spray did you use? Tri-Flow?

M465VS Valve body lubricant spray ($11.70) from Axiom.Com. Dr. Tranny from TransmissionPartsUSA ($6.99). You could also use WD-40, but that lubricant spray is what is recommended. I doubt that there is too much of a difference.

You could use brake cleaner spray to clean it out, but you still have to use a valve body lubricant after that. The brake cleaner spray will remove any oil, or lubricant that is inside of it. If no lubricant is used, the parts will feel very stiff, and be like rubbing metal against metal while it is being assembled. A little lubricant is all that you would need.

WD-40 as assembly lube?

Dogone it! I just ordered a huge pile of stuff from www.transmissionpartsusa.com yesterday. Could have added that to my order. VB assembly lube might be the one thing I would go to a local transmission shop to buy.

Isn't WD-40 also a slight solvent?

The WD-40 could be used to clean it out, but brake cleaner is stronger at removing crud stuck to the inside of the VB. The WD-40 would lubricate it after that. If your order wasn't shipped out, maybe they could throw in that can for you.

oops - clarification

I'm using brake cleaner (and some electrical contact cleaner; depends on which can is closer) to do the cleaning. I left that out of my prior post. Sorry.

I was,... "worried" is too strong, but concerned about the effect of WD-40's solvent qualities on the o-rings.

Big deal? Not big deal?

The order from transmissionpartusa has already shipped. Those guys are pretty impressive; I called them at about 9am Seattle time (yesterday; Monday) and they shipped it about 3 hours later (and this was w/o rush shipping). pretty cool.

Most of the Transmission VB lubes are some form of a teflon based product... I'd assume they are pretty much interchangeable. I have no opinion on using WD-40 either way. If you use brake cleaner make sure you have the spool out, otherwise it will become quite difficult once the lube is removed.

For a general lube and "hold in place" goo, I use vaseline. I also lube all my torringtons and any thrust washers either with ATF or vaseline in the case of thrust washers.

Tri-Flow as assembly lube?

How about Tri-Flow? Isn't that teflon based? Too much ancillary stuff in the fluid?

I'd think it has too much "ancillary" stuff in it. The teflon spray I am using is thin and clear.
